In third grade I was in a school play about the Winter Olympics (nonsensical, I know). I had like two lines, and I send them backwards, stuttering.
HI EVERYBODY! I’m a little busy getting ready to bounce to Vegas for a week, but here are a few quick things:
- The single-cartridge multiplayer in Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes is surprisingly horrible. Not only can you not pick your faction, units or any artifacts, the load time for each game is probably close to five minutes, no exaggeration. Even funnier, one the game ends, the person without the cart is forced to shut his/her DS off, adding even more time onto each round you want to play. I suppose it’s a lot to ask to have the game share well via only one copy, it’s just a shame that such a great game has to suffer so bad in this area.
SOME SONGS TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK:
- “I like you so much better when you’re naked” –Ida Maria. A silly, poppy song, but I find its cheerfulness impossible to resist.
- “Shop Vac” –Jonathon Coulton. J.C. manages to make an aged, crumbling marriage funny somehow.
- “Brick by Boring Brick” –Paramore. I realize I’m not doing my punk-rock cred any favors this week, but I can’t get enough of this song. Like the message, like the instrumentation, and Iove the singer’s voice. Talk about a nice set of pipes.
- “Close To Me” –Valencia, covering the cure. A video from my local alt-rock station which I highly recommend hiding behind another window and not watching. Gross camera work aside, it’s a nice cover of one of my favorite songs.
Next week I guess I should do all death metal or grindcore songs so everyone reading doesn’t realize I’m a total sissy too quickly.

BLACK METAL. DIMMU BORGIR. THE VOCALIST SOUNDS CONSTIPATED CONSTANTLY, WHICH EXPLAINS HIS CONSIDERABLE RAGE. Et cetera.
Hell man, you don’t need to listen to black metal to not be a wuss. As far as I know, there are incredibly few black metal bands that are actually halfway decent, and I don’t such a thing as good grindcore even exists. But if you want some good metal type stuff, try looking up some of these:
Rammstein, which is actually DANCE METAL
Dio, who is pretty much one of the forefathers of all metal music
Ayreon, which is progressive metal, and can be kind of hard to get into, but is pretty good if you like that sort of thing
Tool, which is in a similar vein with Ayreon, but is more of a punk/stoner kind of thing
Also, you should check out some of the older metal bands which got it all started, like Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. (Dio was actually a member of Black Sabbath at one point, but he’s not as well known as the actual band.)
I know you meant that as a joke, but dammit, I will take any chance I can get to unload my musical preferences on people.
Top 5 random music i like
Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains
Peter Fox (Alles Neu is my favorite song)
Mischief Brew
Russian Circles (like a metal version of explosions in the sky)
Frank Turner
@ JBonymo: Heh, I’ve made a note to check that out Jbonymo. Sounds interesting.
@ Nicholas: I’m a little familiar with Sabbath, but only with their singles like Crazy Train and War Pigs (those are both Sabbath, right?). Rammstein I know nothing of except for that “Du Has” single which was a little fun, so you’ll have to recommend me some songs. I’ve never heard of Ayreon, but if you want to suggest some songs, I’ll give them a listen. I know of Dio, but only because of VH1 and name-dropping in Goldfinger and Tenacious D songs. Suggestions are welcome.
When I was in college I loved Iron Maiden. Now though I can barely remember any of their songs. I think “6 Minutes to Midnight” was my favorite.
@Thomas: I know … none of those bands. I will add them to my list of things to check out however. Any particular song recomendations?

Lotta good bands on these lists, I listen to a little bit of everything, but someone I haven’t seen anyone mention is Nightwish, they’ve got a good metal instrumental sound, and an amazing opera-esque singer working vocals, their first singer was amazing, the new one is a little poppish sounding, but still pretty decent. Epica is also an amazing band.
