It turns out Tenderheart’s name is fairly misleading.
If anyone’s wondering, I’ve no idea what possessed me to write this comic. I do know that when I came up with the idea, I did watch the entirety of Starship Troopers to find dialogue for the comic. It was weird because it’s actually a really fun movie, but my notetaking experience kind of tainted it and made it annoying. I had to rewind constantly to catch dialogue, and I kept coming up with different scenes for Dana to draw, sucking myself into the much-dreaded creative task of having to pick between scenarios that are likely of equal quality.
This week was not only pretty busy, but boring besides, so I don’t that I have much interesting to report. Lets see if a nice little bulleted list can’t prove me wrong.
- I saw Rachel Getting Married last night. I can’t say I was a huge fan. It was kind of too Drama-rama-y for me, most of the film revolving around two sisters arguing over who is more of a bitch and who has the harder life. The only plus for me was a 100% irrelevenet scene where the singer from TV on the Radio has a dishwasher-loading contest with the bug-eyed Dad. So, unless you’re into dishwasher efficiency, go ahead and skip this one.
- I have not seen G.I. Joe, and I’m not sure if I will. The trailers do nothing to grab my interest, and even if I did, I know the movie isn’t going to be able to touch the awesome G.I. Joe Resolute, which if you’ve never seen, you absolutely need to watch, just for the Snake Eyes scenes if nothing else.
- District Nine and The Time Traveler’s Wife both come out next weekend. I will probably be seeing both of these. The Time Traveler’s Wife might seem like a chick flick, and I guess it is, but man did I love the book.
- The Burn Notice Finale was last week, which I enjoyed. This season was a little weird though, I feel like a bunch of villains Michael faced, especially towards the end of the season, have been especially evil. There was the one episode where child-beating was alluded to, but even beyond that, I feel like dudes will just bunch a lady or hit a wife at a moment’s notice. It’s realistic I suppose if you’re trying to create these desperate and pretty vile guys, but I really don’t think every bad guy needs to be at the absolute edge of evil every time. I miss the episodes where Mike would have to foil a bank heist or stop a car thief. You know, something fun and sassy, and maybe a dude gets kicked in the face or something. I just feel like it gets a little boring and silly when we’re faced with murdering, serious-as-hell mercenaries from Mike’s past week after week.

@JBonym: The lion is one of the Care Bear Cousins, which were introduced to the show after like a year or two (Hit up Wikipedia for more, and thanks to you as well for coming back week after week JB.)
What absolutely sells this for me is the tremulous line of the sun-chested bear’s mouth. Excellent.
That, and that *is* well-chosen dialogue.

I feel I should point out only the summer finale of Burn Notice aired, not the season finale, as USA does this season-halting nonsense (probably because they make the eps so quickly) until January. Nice comic. I vote you should have given him a metal hand though, just for consistency and the lolz.
@ WR: Haha, yeah, I like that too. I also love how pissed Grumpy bear is. Thanks for the compliments and the repeat visits as always. The comic front has been pretty stagnant since you checked in last. I still have to buy a bunch more of Ultimate Spider-mans from HeavyInk, and We3 and my USM subscription from Marvel have not shipped yet. The only things I can really think of that are even half-related to comics are that I’m reading through Alan Moore’s “Writing for Comics,” which is good in places but also kind of slow and meandering like most writing theory books, and once I get some free time I plan on reading through the Webcomic “Girl Genius” to see what the fuss is all about. Anything exciting on your end? Recommendations are a thing that I always love.

@ Fred: So are we getting another eight episodes in winter? This both intrigues and confuses me, as I feel like Ep. 8 or whatever it is was pretty conclusive. Thanks for the compliment, and I totally should have given him a metal hand.

Well, what are the genres you are most interested in, eh?
Some general suggestions until you answer that question:
Unwritten (http://heavyink.com/title/4620-Unwritten): There’s a decent synopsis at Heavy Ink. Basically, you meet a man (Tom Taylor) whose father wrote a series not unlike Harry Potter, and the disappeared mysteriously. And the character in those books is suspiciously similar to Tom. So much so that some people think that Tom and the character are one and the same. The weird things start happening. The art is nice, and it’s an interesting story so far. Heavy Ink informs me that the fourth issue came out this week, so I’ll have a nice bit of reading to do on Monday when I go and pick up my pulls. Heavy Ink looks to have the singles in stock if you were looking to catch up, or I could even probably be easily convinced to loan you my own.
Irredeemable (http://heavyink.com/title/4561-Irredeemable): Again, Heavy Ink provides a decent synopsis, but the basic premise is that a superhero inexplicably becomes a Supervillian (capital S for s… s… semphasis). So far many more questions have been raised than answers delivered, but it feels like this could turn into a decent ongoing series. As with Unwritten, this is a fairly new series; Irredeemable stands at 5 issues, with a trade just released collecting the first four for $9.99, and the fifth issue promo-priced at $.99.
I chose those two because they are new so there’s not a lot of backstory to catch up with (and because I don’t know your likes/dislikes – besides Spiderman obviously rocking – I figured newer was probably better).
If you wanted to check out some single-volume stuff, I’d suggest Empire (http://heavyink.com/graphic_novel/248-Empire) by the same guy as Irredeemable and which is a “What if the bad guy finally won” type of deal, and Giantkiller (http://heavyink.com/graphic_novel/7455-Giant-Killer) by Dan Brereton which is a visually gorgeous story involving giant monsters.

@WR: Thanks for the recommendations. I actually own Empire, which I love and have read over many a times. I might skip Unwritten, since I’m not down with Harry Potter, but I’ll definitely take a look at the book before writing it off. Irredeemable sounds neat, and I’ll probably pick it up sometime soon. I’ve actually heard (good things) of Giantkiller, so I’ll make a note to check that one out as well.
As for my tastes overall, they’re pretty broad I guess. I’ll see if I can describe them in a meaningful way: Loved Watchmen, bored by Sandman. Loved Preacher, Fables and Y:The Last Man, never trucked much with other Vertigo books. Keep meaning to read Ex Machina. I like Invincble and Walking Dead. More mainstream-wise, I loved Civil War. I still love Daredevil, USM, all Bendis’s Avenger’s books, and Brubaker on Captain America. I don’t read very much DC at all, though All-Star Superman is just the greatest.
